NORFOLK, Va. – (November 17, 2008) – Thirty students at the Culinary Institute of Virginia, the School of Culinary Arts at ECPI College of Technology, will race against the clock—and each other—in a Mystery Basket culinary competition November 21, from 8 am until 12:30 pm. Two-person teams will have 90 minutes to prepare a three-course meal that will be judged by local culinary professionals. And what will they be cooking? Not even the competitors know!

The ingredients available for use will be unveiled moments before the cooking begins from the mystery baskets. Students will be scored in areas such as: creativity, technical difficulty, flavor, and the presentation of each menu item. The top three teams will be awarded scholarships worth a total of $2,000 (and bragging rights over their classmates).

Culinary Institute of Virginia’s Culinary Arts program includes hands-on training with the emphasis on mastering basic professional culinary skills. Students also participate in externships as part of the Culinary Arts program to provide real world experience. Flexible program schedules are offered with day, evening, and weekend classes; students can earn an associate degree in less than two years.
